MTB Weekend off grid Rioja

Epic Mountain Bike weekend adventure lost on the trails of Spain’s most uninhabited region of Cameros in La Rioja.

Ride the unbeaten singletrack of La Rioja Bike Race passing by abandoned villages. Descending by canyon hillsides and haunting beech, oak and pine forests that have nothing to envy to the trails on the Pyrenees.

Cameros is the forgotten Rioja. More than one million sheep pastured around Cameros during the middle age, it was a wool Spain’s emporium. Nowadays uninhabited and forgotten its hidden treasure are the trails network lost in the mountains connecting abandoned villages, their churches, barns and homes full of history.

Friday: Drive and shuttle. We’ll pick you up at the airport (before 10am) or hotel and drive Cameros where we’ll have a light lunch (not included) then get a couple of shuttles to make contact with the terrain. We’ll finish the ride at the hostel with a barbecue.

Saturday: Prepare your legs and… your camera. After breakfast we’ll load our bikes on the shuttle and part of the first killer climb. Shuttle will drop us at a nice old village from where we’ll do a short climb to the head of our first descend by one of the most beautiful rails of the weekend. Then we’ll clib short again to reach a limestone peak with great 360 vistas to other valleys from where we’ll start the longest descend of the day.

From here we’ll do the longest and hardest climb of the day to reach the third descent by alpine terrain passing by a village with a nice balcony with… more vistas, then our final descend of the morning to go back to the hostel for lunch.

In the afternoon the shuttle will drive us to the same initial village for a thrilling descend back to the hostel.

Sunday: Did you save energy? We’ll start with a demanding climb after breakfast passing by one of the villages and start our first descend of the day thrilling by a beech forest. Second climb and more descend over narrow singletrack to end on a creek with a haunting pond. Third climb and down stoping by the biggest abanoned village of the weekend before heading back to the hostel for lunch and back to Madrid.

During three days we’ll stick to the same plan on the weekend and will add a couple of days more to ride the trails on the van/ebike vídeo below but… on normal bikes! Let’s ride!!
