For many of us that live a urban life in a big city, plenty of schedules, riding alone is the only chance. You’ll pick the bike suddenly in a moment you have free time with no chance of making any plans with riding pals or meeting somewhere specifically. The challenge of riding alone is rather mental than physical, as the great Miguel Indurain said «The body can always go farther than the mind».

Before going out with your bike alone, there are some barriers you must pass, first of all… motivation. Because riding alone… close to our house doesn’t really looks like riding with your friends epic trails on a dream weekend. Here is the second barrier, where to go…for those of you that live in big cities, riding by streets with cars or through small dusty trails doesn’t look ideal. In order to get some rewards you’ll have to tend to the outskirts and pass through the invisible border that split city and country. Many of us have never seen this border, but right after the last inch of asphalt there is a belt of unwanted urban waste that resist to leave, is like passing the skin and finding the sewer right after.

The other barrier is keeping motivation on, one of the tricks I use instead of making laps in a circuit is going far, you’ll always have to go back and there can’t be excuses. If we keep close to our place there the temptation of coming back before the whole riding is done will remain. If you go far from home… you’ll always have to make the effort to come back and the farther you go the more chances you’ll have to find a nice reward… a nice trail, wonderful landscape or a wild animal. Don’t be surprised, the outskirts are always full of wild animals going on with their lives despite us.

Once you are charged with motivation, you have passed the stinky waste belt right after civilization, found your pace and started to collect rewards you start to meet fellow men on the road. Suddenly you realize you are not the only crazy riding alone and the biker spirit starts to shine, everybody saying hello, cool! But not everything will be big barriers, riding alone has its advantages and once you get a nice pace, got warm and collected some rewards comes the biggest discovery of the lone ride.

Yourself… as it is… Mountain Biking is like live itself, it goes fast and any wrong choice in a bad moment can lead to disaster, but a chain of good decisions in the right moments can deliver great amounts of satisfaction. When cadence becomes a mantra and you have accepted your solitude, ideas start to flow, some of us have thought about an ideas recorder APP to collect our thoughts when we ride alone, we’d fix the world. Once arrived to the opposite point of the route you make a pause, look back and see what’s left to go home again but it’s worth, as you go back you notice how your average speed goes back to reality and realize that you have improved in every ride.

At home you find new lone riders, this time in Strava, the virtual place plenty of lonely riders against whom you have been competing all this time and that makes you sting and over all feel that even when you ride alone you belong to a huge community that shares the values of and the passion of Mountain Biking, those that smiled the same way you did and for the same reason in the same point being alone. Do you ride alone? Do you share some of this feelings? Please leave a comment below. If you don’t want to ride alone, cheer up, take a look at our tours page and come ride with us!
